Brand Strategy & Visual Identity for Women’s Health Startup: The Mothership Physio Case Study
A new brand identity for a postnatal pilates programme
"Vardeep is a lovely person, open, friendly and supportive. She empowers you to make the right decisions for your business. Setting up a business can be challenging, but Vardeep supported us throughout the process, not just at the end. Her concepts boosted our confidence in taking our brand to market, making us feel like a real team. I was amazed at the thoroughness of her questions, covering every aspect of our offering. She explained that this would help uncover the real essence of our brand."
The Problem
Claire and Emma are pelvic floor physios who each ran their own business, and wanted to bring their skills together into one new joint venture supporting women with postnatal exercise and recovery. A fresh start, a fresh face, and a proper launch.
But they were stepping into a crowded space, with obstacles in their way:
- A crowded, noisy market. Personal trainers and influencers claiming to have all the answers made it hard for two genuinely qualified physios to stand out.
- Every competitor looked the same. Women's health and wellness brands defaulted to soft pinks, purples and greens, and Claire and Emma knew they didn't want to blend into that, or, as they put it, look like a tampon product.
- A blank canvas and a big decision. They knew what they didn't want, but not yet how to build a brand that felt impactful, professional and unmistakably theirs, without a name or identity to launch behind.
What they needed was a brand that made them feel ready to go to market, and to be taken seriously the moment someone saw it. Because when you're investing everything in a launch, you have to feel proud enough of your brand to put it out into the world.
The Solution
They came to me through a trusted recommendation, wanting depth as much as design. So I gave them a proper foundation, built through conversation.
- A thorough discovery process: so the brand was built on real substance, not surface. My questions dug into every aspect of what they offered, which they said uncovered the true essence of their brand.
- Brand strategy and positioning: so they could stop over-explaining and speak with clarity. Getting clear on exactly who they serve gave them the confidence to go after that audience without guesswork.
- Two distinct visual concepts: so they had a real, considered choice. They went with the bolder, more adventurous direction, with strong typography and a striking orange, deliberately miles away from the usual pinks and purples.
- Naming - The Mothership Physio: so their business had a name that instantly summed it up. It took time and some tough moments, but we honed in on one that was perfect for them.
- A launch-ready identity, flyer and social assets: so they could go to market looking like a real, credible team from day one.
The Outcome
Claire and Emma launched with a brand they were genuinely proud of.
- A bold, distinctive identity that stands apart from everything else in the market
- A brand that's clear so it needs no explaining, people get what they do in a few short sentences
- The confidence to go to market and go after their ideal audience
- A brand document they refer back to and pass on to collaborators, saving hours of explaining
- Strong, positive feedback: customers describe it as strong, cool and refreshingly different
- The feeling of being a real team, ready to be taken seriously
The brand gave them the confidence to launch.

My Reflections
Building a brand from scratch, for a business that hasn't launched yet, can feel daunting. There's a lot of trust involved, and a lot riding on getting it right.
That's exactly why I go deep before we ever touch design. Pinning down the strategy and the real essence of a brand is what makes everything after it meaningful, and what lets a founder walk into their launch feeling proud and sure of themselves.
Working with Claire and Emma, and watching their brand come to life, was such a joy. And it's what I bring to every project I work on.
