Strategic Event Branding for CommsRebel: A Case Study in Distinctive Conference Identity Design
Event design and branding for a new rebellious conference
"The most significant outcome was the immediate recognition of our brand, setting our event apart from others. The energy and uniqueness were evident at first glance. Vardeep instils confidence to break boundaries, encouraging exploration of ideas and seamlessly bringing them together into a meaningful brand. Her exceptional graphic design skills, combined with her interpersonal and coaching expertise, make her a standout collaborator. It's such a joy to work with someone as talented as Vardeep."
— Advita Patel, CommsRebel
The Problem
Advita Patel of CommsRebel was launching a conference, Unleash Your Inner Rebel and she had a clear, brave vision for it: loud, proud, bright and unmistakably different from every other event in the industry. It also needed to sit alongside her established CommsRebel brand without disappearing into it.
What she didn't have yet was the brand to carry that vision. And she'd run into a couple of issues:
- She had a big vision but no identity to hold it. The event needed a look as loud and confident as the idea behind it, and it didn't exist yet.
- Previous designers had played it too safe. Brand strategists she'd worked with before were cautious about the bright colours and boldness she wanted, which held her back.
- She needed someone who'd actually got it. Not just execute a brief, but understand the why behind the event and run with it.
What Advita needed was someone who'd take her boldest instincts seriously and make them real.
The Solution
When she brought me the event, I started where I always do: with the why.
- Questions before design: so the brand was built intentionally. I asked about the purpose of the event, the why, and what she wanted the brand to achieve, then ran with it.
- A loud, proud, unmistakable identity: so the event stood apart on sight. Bright, high-energy and striking, aligned with CommsRebel but bold enough to stand on its own.
- Stage and set design that came to life in the room: so the brand landed in person, not just on screen. The pillars and staging exceeded what Advita had pictured, and became a talking point at the venue.
- A flexible, collaborative process: so her ideas were welcomed, not shut down. When she asked for a lightning bolt mid-way through, the answer was "let's make it work", not "that's off-brand".
- A second event the following year: so the brand could grow. She wanted to push it further without losing what worked, and we did exactly that.
The Outcome
The brand did what Advita hoped, and more.
- Immediate recognition -people knew it was a different kind of event just from the brand
- A striking identity that stood out clearly against others in the industry
- Buzz at the venue: people noticed it, talked about it, and shared it on social media
- A look that translated brilliantly to photos and online promotion
- Enough success to bring me back for a second year, and other work since
- New confidence in her own brand: proof she could be bold and still look professional
As Advita put it, the brand gave people something warm and engaging to be part of, a community feel.

My Reflections
What I loved about this project was the permission to be bold, to shape it into something that looked as good as it was
That's the part of my work that goes beyond design. It's getting into the heart of what someone's trying to say, drawing out the ideas they might be nervous to voice, and giving them the confidence to put their brand out into the world and feel proud of it.
